I just started reading Seth Godin's recently published book, "Linchpin."
Captivating read and only 30 pages into it so far.
So, here's the deal, if you're waiting for someone else to tell you what to do, guess what? I won't be meeting you at the top. Times have changed in the workplace and culture. We know it. We feel it. He describes it.
If you bring dispensability to the table, you will be dispensable. If you want to be indisensable, you must create yourself to be indispensable.
Seth believes we are all capable of being the "Linchpin." A "Linchpin" is someone who creates and adds value thus becomes indispensable. This is NOT the person on the sidelines waiting for the command "go" before she makes a move. A "Linchpin" is self motivated and busy creating stories worth telling. Remember my book recommendation Donald Miller's " A Thousand Miles in a Million Years?" We are the stories we live. I'll bet a Linchpin's life is a story worth telling.
The key is to leave external motivations aside and to tap into your internal fortitude, creativity, desire and abilities to create value.
I believe this requires a keen sense of who you are, weeds, warts, brilliance and everything in between. Full participation required. Your greatest failure could be your most valuable resource.
What is it about you that is unique, unforgetable and leveragable? How might you switch self perception to benefit current culture?
Remember my last post? You aren't who you were yesterday. You own the creative rights to who you are now and tomorrow!
Anyone game for becoming today's "Linchpin?"
