The Climb
I was on a walking, biking, kayaking excursion in our neighborhood yesterday with my daughter, Esther. We had finished kayaking, she was mounted on her bike and we were leaving the beach parking lot when she paused and gazed at the hill before her and said, "Mom, that hill doesn't look steep from here but when you get up close and your peddling up it, it's really hard."
She had peddled that hill countless times.
As we headed home, Esther's insight reminded me of the circumstances we confront in life.
We set our sights on "X" with enthusiasm and expectation but when we are in the middle of the creation, we're paused with the resistance we face.
Toward the goal of anything in life that is truly worthy of your time, you will face The Climb.
The Climb. The challenges confronted in the creation process of the best life choices you make in life's journey.
It proceeds something like this.
Big Idea, Desire, You go for it with abandon.
Enthusiastic start. Beginner's luck. The Climb strikes.
What happens when we are struck with The Climb in the creation process?
The faint of heart, sit down. They bow out.
The committed, continue to create come mole hill, bunny hill, rolling hill or mountain. Eyes are on the prize, they grow through The Climb,
deep and strong. Confronting The Climb builds muscle that can only be strengthened when we push through resistance.
Trainers call it "resistance training."
We need it. So, don't resist it.
We've all confronted The Climb.
After our adoption, we had the initial honeymoon but then we had to get down the task of creating this new family. We were climbing for about five years. By far the most difficult phase in life I have ever climbed but so worth burning away the "fat" in my life. I became lean and courageous.
I'm the middle of The Climb with my coaching practice. I've been tempted several occasions to get off the course and go be a chef or someone else, anyone else felt easier, however, I know my greater call is to heal the broken hearted and set captives free through the avenue of coaching.
So, I'll continue to climb.
That which is worthy of your life, is worthy of The Climb.
If you're confronting The Climb, instead of growing faint of heart, take a break, rehydrate, refuel and continue to climb. You don't have to go fast. Remember the tortoise beat the hare. Your personal climb isn't a race, it's a journey.
What a gorgeous post, Dana. And so true. Just what I needed to read today.
