The "Coming" is about having a little faith.
I had the privilege to listen to Mitch Albom and Pastor Henry Covington from I Am My Brother's Keeper in church yesterday. In his latest book, "Have a Little Faith", Mitch Albom deftly bridges the religious gap between his childhood rabbi and a preacher with a sordid past working to bring justice to his ailing community in Detroit. Mitch rediscovers faith as these two men of faith share their lives and stories concluding belief in something bigger than yourself is a balm to comfort modern ills.
I was reminded yesterday that we are called to live extraordinary lives. Lives marked by extraordinary feats not just for our own advancement rather toward the uplifting of the down trodden in our midst.
During the final days of the "Coming" season, nurture big and small opportunities to extend yourself on behalf of the hurting, thirsty, naked and wounded.
Possibilities:
Donate to the Salvation bell ringers, clean out the closets and donate warm clothes, coats and blankets, extend a hand to an elderly neighbor, make eye contact with each sales person you encounter and extend a warm smile and kind greeting, donate to a charity in lieu of a gift, contact someone you know experienced the loss of a loved one in 2009 and simply let them know you are thinking about them. A friend of mine heard about a house fire in her community this month and posted a note on FB asking friends and family to donate assistance. Several years ago, this same friend rallied a few personal friends and sent a generous check to a family who had adopted several special needs kids. Call your local shelter and ask what their greatest need is and contribute toward their need. Remember shelters tend to have an abundance of volunteers for the holidays and a shortage in January, mark your calendar to volunteer an hour or two in January when the need is greatest.
